Balloons of Remembrance

There are days that stick in your mind and stay with you forever.

November 22, 2010 is one of those days.  The word “cancer” was spoken that day; to me, and to the family of an eight-year-old boy named Rex.

This is another one of those days.   It embedded not just a word, but sweet images into my heart.

This time the word was “Goodbye”,  accompanied by the sight of hundreds of red balloons and a single blue balloon in an almost cloudless November sky.

Along with the voices of children singing “This Little Light of Mine,” I think I will remember our school’s celebration of Rex’s life to the tune of the song my husband often plays on his banjo:

Just a few more weary days and then,
I’ll fly away.

To a land where joy shall never end,
I’ll fly away

I’ll fly away, O Glory,
I’ll fly away.

When I die, Hallelujah, bye and bye,
I’ll fly away.
